How to Become a Better Blogger

Blogging has become an increasingly popular activity with many internet users all over the world. There are social blogs, professional blogs and personal blogs. However, not all blogs end up being successful. Some blogs draw an enthusiastic following, while others fade away in obscurity.

The following are tips that will help you improve your blog, making it more readable and more popular.

Tips for becoming a Better-Blogger

Define your purpose

To create a better blog, you need to determine why you are blogging in the first place. What is the aim of your blog, really? Is it a personal diary containing your thoughts, emotions and experiences? Is it a journal where you outline projects and preserve ideas? Is it a commentary on social trend, current events and politics? Is it a social website for sharing links, interacting with friends and meeting new people? Is it a hobbyist or professional site?

It is possible to have a blog that combine many of these elements. However, many readers would want you to specialize. If you want to write about different topics, it would be wise to have separate blogs so as to avoid boring and alienating some of your readers.

To define your purpose, you need to know your audience. This will enable you to determine the writing style and voice that will be most appropriate.

Create visual appeal

Though content is important, it is not everything. Your blog needs to have some visual appeal. If your page is unreadable or distracting, you will scare away potential readers. Your blog’s visual design will depend on your theme and your audience. You can use font styles, graphics and color to set the tone and mood. Make sure the content matches the tone. Avoid designs which make your blog difficult to read.

Make navigation easy

Design your blog in a way that makes it easy for visitors to navigate and do whatever they need to do. For example, if you are using RSS feeds and comments, make sure your readers know how to subscribe to the feed or post a comment. In addition, you should make it easy for visitors to find previous posts. All the archives should be organized logically in different categories.

Stay in one place

Many bloggers want to experiment with various blog hosting sites. While it makes sense to look for the best set up, you need to settle down as soon as possible so that readers can find you easily. Moving around too much might lead to losing some of your readers.

Engage your readers

Establishing a relationship with readers is vital for attracting and keeping them. Tell your readers something about yourself. If they know who is writing, they might be more interested in reading your content. However, you don’t have to disclose too many personal details. At times, you could even choose to remain nameless and identify yourself using a pseudonym. However, it would be of more benefit to you if you used your real name and made available contact information. Interact with your readers through the comments feature. When you engage your readers, you win their trust and become more credible.

Have a blogging schedule

Blog readers can be very fickle. Your audience will always want to find new content on your blog. This means that you need to work with a blogging schedule. Let your readers know how often your blog will be updated. Then stick to your schedule, even if the posts are not long or detailed. If you have to go away for a while, let your readers know when you will be back.

Keep it short and concise

Most readers have crowded schedules and a very short attention span. They would therefore prefer to read short and concise posts instead of long, complex ones. Break up lengthy pieces into short paragraphs. In addition, use common words so as to attract more readers.
